Hebrews 3: Faithful in God’s House
Scripture:
“Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”
— Hebrews 3:5–6 (ESV)
Devotion:
One of the greatest honors that could ever be said about a human being is what was spoken of Moses: “He was faithful in all God’s house.” This was no small commendation—it was God Himself who declared it. Moses’ life was marked not by perfection, but by consistent faithfulness to God’s voice and leadership, even in the face of rejection, hardship, and wandering.
Hebrews 3 compares the faithfulness of Moses to the supreme faithfulness of Christ, the Son over the house of God. Jesus is the model of absolute faithfulness, obedient to the Father even unto death. He was trustworthy with every word, every moment, and every soul entrusted to Him.
But the passage also carries a sober contrast: the unfaithfulness of the Israelites in the wilderness. Though they saw miracles and heard God’s voice, they hardened their hearts, gave in to fear, and died in unbelief. Scripture calls it the “deceitfulness of sin”—unbelief that creeps in slowly and convinces the heart that God can’t be trusted.
You and I stand at a crossroads every day:
Will we choose to be faithful—like Moses and Jesus—or will we fall to the deception of doubt and rebellion?
I remember asking my father what he thought was the most important character trait in a man. His answer was simple but profound: faithfulness. Not charisma, not gifting—faithfulness. It’s what God honors. It’s what builds a legacy. And it’s what proves that Christ truly reigns in our hearts.
The verse ends with a beautiful assurance: “We are His house if we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”
That means faithfulness is not a matter of striving, but holding fast—clinging to Jesus in faith, in trust, and in love.
Prayer:
Lord, I want to be found faithful in Your house. Help me not to waver in unbelief like those in the wilderness, but to trust You completely. May the end of my life be marked by one word: faithful. Strengthen me today to hold fast to the hope I have in Christ.
