Genesis 37: From Pit to Platform
Scripture Focus:
“So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the robe of many colors that he wore.”
— Genesis 37:23 (ESV)
Reflection:
Joseph’s story is more than a tale of suffering and triumph—it’s a prophetic glimpse of Jesus. Just as Joseph was stripped of his robe and thrown into a pit by his own brothers, Jesus too was stripped and rejected by those He came to save. Joseph’s dreams foretold that his brothers would one day bow before him. In the same way, Scripture tells us that every knee will bow before Jesus, the King of kings.
But why was Joseph cast down? Jealousy.
And why was Jesus crucified? Pride and a religious spirit.
The Pharisees could not comprehend a man who walked in such power, intimacy with the Father, and purity of heart. Instead of humbling themselves, they compared, grew envious, and plotted to destroy Him.
A religious spirit is dangerous. It thrives on comparison, focuses on self-effort, and resists the grace of God. Pride says, “I can do it.” Humility says, “I need God.” Pride leads us to judge others, even God Himself. And pride can make us spiritually blind—just like Joseph’s brothers and the religious leaders in Jesus’ day.
Jesus warns us about the dangers of unchecked pride:
“But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment…”
— Matthew 5:22
Anger, bitterness, jealousy—these are signs that we are no longer walking in humility. And humility is the soil where faith grows.
What makes Joseph a true foreshadowing of Jesus is not only his suffering—but his response.
He didn’t let the pit become his prison. He forgave. He clung to God. He abided. And in time, God lifted him up. Jesus, too, was not held to the cross by nails—it was love that kept Him there. He forgave those who crucified Him. He loved His enemies to the end.
You may be in a pit season right now—misunderstood, rejected, falsely accused. But take heart. The pit is preparation. It’s not a grave—it’s a platform. And how you respond in the pit will determine whether you're ready for promotion.
Don’t let pride, anger, or offense define your response. Instead, cry out to God. Abide in Him. Forgive those who hurt you. Walk in humility. And in due time, God Himself will lift you up.
Prayer:
Father, I thank You that even in the lowest places, You are with me. Forgive me for the pride, anger, or comparison that tries to creep into my heart. Strip away every religious mindset, and clothe me with humility and grace. Help me walk through every pit season with faith and fellowship in You. Like Joseph—and like Jesus—may I abide in love, forgive others, and trust You to lift me up in Your perfect time. Amen.
