The purpose of the holy spirit
While I was in India this past week, the Lord highlighted Luke 4:18 which reveals that there is a specific purpose by which the Holy Spirit came. He has always been active in the world (Gn 1:2; Ps 33:6); He empowered prophets, priests and kings (Num 11:25; 1 Sm 16:13); He breathed the Scriptures (2 Tm 3:16; 2 Pt 1:21).
This side of Pentecost, the indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit is accomplished at the moment of salvation. He comes to dwell in all who are justified by the blood of Jesus and are adopted into His family. But God wants more than just a permanent dwelling in man. He wants to give us the ministry of Jesus which leads us to a deeper fellowship, partnership with the Holy Spirit to accomplish His mission. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ; that if we draw nearer to Him, the more missional we become.
The Holy Spirit has desires and it has been expressed clearly in the Scriptures that He came not just to dwell in man but to also empower man to fulfill God’s mission that is clearly seen all throughout the Book of Acts. May we never limit God. If we want a deeper life in God we must have a closer relationship with the Holy Spirit and engage Him not only in emotional devotion, but also say yes to His ministry.
Luke 4:18 clearly reveals what happens when we choose to obey the Lord and the Holy Spirit empowers us for ministry.
